- The Rymox Process - Process Control System/MMI for the Rymox Bench Unit Prototype
Client: Recol Engineering Ltd.
- Project Objective: To design and implement a fully functional Process Control System for the Rymox laboratory prototype.
Solution Specifics: The Rymox Process is a totally unique soil remediation process, and the Rymox "bench unit" is primarily a research tool designed to experimentally test theoretical concepts.
LabVIEW and National Instruments SCXI hardware were chosen for this system for 2 reasons: 1) typically shorter software development period and 2) quick and easy system modification.
The hardware system consists of a single SCXI Chassis interfacing 50+ process I/O points to an E-series DAQ card. A four channel mass flow controller is connected to the control system through a standard RS-232 serial connection. A second PC is connected to the process control PC by an Ethernet network connection. This second PC controls a gas chromatograph and passes GC data over the Ethernet to the primary control computer.
The primary control software is a LabVIEW application consisting of more than 300 VIs. This software handles SCXI input polling and output updating, data logging, real-time and historical trending, error-trapping, system alarm functions, operator logging and security,RS-232 communication, PID control of temperature and solids flow, supervisory control of gas flows, pressure monitoring and alarms,etc. All critical system parameters are visible from the main VI panel, and process setpoints and PID parameters are a single button click away. When the process has been switched to automatic control, operator intervention is rarely required.

- The Rymox Process - Process Control System/MMI for the Rymox Demonstration Plant
Client: Recol Engineering Ltd.
- Project Objective: To adapt the Process Control System designed for the Rymox laboratory prototype to the full-scale Demonstration Plant.
Solution Specifics: The Rymox Process is a totally unique soil remediation process, and the Rymox "Demonstration Plant" was designed to demonstrate the commercial and technical viability of a large-scale version of the Rymox Process.
LabVIEW and National Instruments SCXI hardware were chosen for this system for 3 reasons: 1) typically shorter software development period, 2) quick and easy system modification, and 3) to leverage previous "Bench System" development.
The hardware system consists of 3 SCXI Chassis interfacing 400+process I/O points to an PCI-MIO DAQ card. Five 8-channel mass flow controllers are connected to the control system through 5standard RS-232 serial connections. Three PCs are used in the system, connected via standard Ethernet network connections; a Process Server, an MMI/ Operator interface "Client", and the thirdPC controls 2 gas chromatographs and passes GC data over the Ethernetto the Process Server.
The software solution for this project consists of a distributed LabVIEW application of more than 700 VIs, and a third-party program for GC control and data processing. The "Process Server" component of the software handles SCXI input polling and output updating,data logging, error-trapping, system alarm functions, RS-232 communication, PID control of temperature and solids flow, supervisory controlof gas flows, pressure monitoring and alarms, etc. The Operator Interface "Client" software is primarily devoted to data display,operator logging and security, real-time and historical trending, system alarm notification, and operator input functions. All critical system parameters are visible from the client's main VI panel,and detailed process subsystem displays are a single button clickaway. Like the Bench Unit software (above), this system was designed for a minimum of operator intervention.

Client: Tritcom Systems
- Project Objective: To design software prototypes using the LabVIEWenvironment for market and end-user testing. Successful softwaredesigns will be ported to conventional programming languages for distribution.
Solution Specifics: LabVIEW was chosen for rapid development andcross-platform versatility. Final products and/or beta and demo versions may be distributed via the Internet, so smaller executable code produced by conventional programming languages is required.Due to nondisclosure agreements, the specific nature of theseprojects may not be disclosed at this time.
